Each recipient receives full funding for one year of tuition and fees as well as a small stipend to cover uniforms, books and transportation. The Fellows’ goal is to remove a financial barrier for South Hayward residents seeking new skills, certifications, and pathways to sustainable careers.

Tennyson High School Teacher and Koshland Fellow Sandra Navarro shared that "not only does this scholarship provide needed educational funds for residents to complete certification programs, but it also sets them on a course towards livable wages and a dignified life."

This scholarship is a game changer for many students who would not have had the opportunity to pursue a certificate program to advance their career. Scholarship recipient  Rabia Zadran, who will start her Medical Assisting Program at Chabot College in the fall, stated that, “If it wasn't for this scholarship, I wouldn't be able to go to college.” Another scholarship recipient Sergio Corona Martinez will be attending Chabot College to become a Software Specialist. He said, “With the help of this scholarship, I realized a bright future that I never thought possible.”

During a time of skyrocketing housing costs and increasing economic displacement, Ms. Navarro shares that a key intention of the Koshland Opportunity Scholarship is "to uplift our most vulnerable community members so they may remain connected to the place and people of Hayward."
